Informal Teaching

For individuals who are looking for an exciting yet relaxed way to enjoy China, WSIEA offers a wonderful opportunity for English speakers to connect with the Chinese culture. We match teachers with students in various cities across China. Teachers will have the opportunity to engage with Chinese students and families on a daily basis through family activities, tutor sessions, local excursions, and more. It’s truly an unique experience for all parties involved!

Basic Applicant Requirements

  • High School Diploma
  • Tutoring or Teaching Experience
  • References from Professional or Academic Sources
  • Flexibility in Working in a Foreign Environment
  • Native English Speakers

Stipend and Benefits

  • Monthly Stipend (Between 2,000 RMB – 4,000 RMB per month based on education and experience)
  • Housing (Comfortable personal room, situated in your host family’s home)
  • Arrival Greet (Your hosts will greet you at their local airport/train-station and help familiarize you to their city)
  • Meals (3 meals per day with your host family (authentic Chinese cooking))
  • In-City Excursions (Your hosts will accompany you to famous tourist sites within their city limits)

This program requires teachers to offer at least 4 hours of face-time instructions with their students per day. Students are usually middle school, high school, or college students who are looking to improve their English for the purpose of studying abroad in the future. Programs duration can be between weeks or months, depending on the availability of both parties. Families, students, and teachers of both countries must undergo interviews and background checks before being admitted for the program to ensure proper and safe environments for all parties involved.

To Apply to the Program, Applicants are required to submit the following:

1. Program Application

2. Resume (Highlighting Any Teaching/Tutoring Experiences)

3. Personal statement of why you are interested in China and what you hope to gain from this exchange opportunity

4. Copy of your passport’s main page (colored)

5. 2 personal, professional, or academic reference letters

6. Copies of your educational diplomas, certificates, and/or transcripts

7. Updated picture

8. Proof of international travel insurance for the duration of the program (may be submitted after placement contract is signed)

Application Fee:

An application fee of $100.00 is due with the application form. This fee is to ensure that the applicant is serious about obtaining placement through WSIEA. If accepted, upon satisfaction of the program and the completion of an acceptable Exit Interview, WSIEA will refund half of the original application fee back to the applicant. The application fee is not reusable toward another position if the applicant has already been placed through WSIEA in the past.

Application deadline is at least 90 days prior to desired departure.
